In general terms, blood can be defined as a liquid connective tissue which helps in the transportation of oxygen (O₂) from the lungs to various parts of the body.

Some functions of blood are as follows :-

  • Oxygen is transported by blood to the tissues of the body for the breakdown of digested food.

  • Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) is transported to the lungs by the blood plasma.

  • The digested and absorbed nutrients are transported by the blood to the tissues.

  • Nitrogenous wastes are transported by the blood to the Kidneys.

  • Blood helps in the transportation of various hormones from the glands to the target organs.

  • Blood helps in the rapid healing of wear and tear by forming clots at the wounded sites with the help of platelets.
