Blue baby syndrome is a congenital birth defect in which the child is born with the great blood vessels transposed. The child can't get enough oxygen to it's tissues, so it often has a bluish tint to it's mucous membranes and under it's nail even when at rest. As the child begins to walk, it is noticed that it tires readily and often can be seen squatting and appearing short of breath while other children the same age are busy playing hard.

There is a surgical procedure that can correct the situation, and it is done by age three.
