BOD is the Biological Oxygen Demand which is the amount of dissolved oxygen required by aerobic bacteria in a body of water to break down organic material present in it. 
It shows how polluted a water body is. If the BOD is high, then it is more polluted.....if BOD is less, then it is less polluted...
