It is the necessary energy to break a mole of specific bonds.
For example, when CH4 is divided into CH 3 + H range is broken, so it requires a different amount of energy than to say when 'piece' CH CH2 and H-3.
Notice that the product is only the pieces that occur when the vessel breaks.
