The orbitals of an atom which take part in the bonding and stabilize the bond are called bonding orbitals. These orbitals are located in the region between the nuclei of the atoms and and have less energy which helps in stabilizing the bond.

The combination of the two atomic orbitals produces two molecular orbitals of different energies. The one with the lower energy is the bonding orbital, holding the atoms together; the other is the anti-bonding orbital, which could tend to push the atoms apart. In case of valence electrons, only the lower(bonding) orbital is filled.
