Brahmo Samaj (Brahma Samaj/ Branhma Samajam) is a Hindu religious society founded by great society reformer "Raja Ramamohan Roy" of West Bengal.  It was founded in August, 1828 in West Bengal.

It was for uplifting of Hindu religion and faith. It's main belief is that there is one and only one God "Brahman" who is omniscient and omnipresent.

Vedas, Upanishads, hymns and mantras were chanted and prayers were held once a week in a big hall with a lot of people present. It was a parallel to Bible reading in a church. It was started with orthodox Telugu Brahmins but later continued with Bengal Brahmins. Audience included every caste and religion too.

Later on Brahmo Samaj worked on social reforms in the superstition filled Indian society.  It worked against child marriages, sati system of burning widows, corruption , impurity, superstitions, caste system, Devdasi practices of exploiting women, dowry, domestic oppression of women etc.

Brahmo samaj propagates belief that people should live of free will and pure life unharmful to others. It believes in monotheism and rejects polytheism.

After the death of Raja Ramamohan Roy, Debendranath Tagore gave it a big practical uplift in 1849 in Calcutta.
