Breathing is the process of moving air into and out of the lungs to facilitate gas exchange with the internal environment, mostly by bringing in oxygen and flushing out carbon dioxide.

Breathing
- Breathing is defined as the intake of Oxygen and removal of carbon dioxide from the body.
- It is a voluntary process which takes place at the lungs with the help of diaphragm ,sternum, external intercostal muscles , etc
- It is a energy consuming process.
- It consists of inspiration and expiration. During inspiration air from outside moves into the lungs whereas during expiration air from the lungs move outside.
- On an average. a healthy man breathes 12 to 16 times per minute.This is called a respiratory rate. The volume of air involved in breathing movements can be estimated by using a spirometer.
