Botanically, eggplant is a berry, just like blueberries, watermelon, or tomatoes. It's the fruit of the plant, and contains the seeds of the plant.

Culinarily, it's a vegetable, as it's used in main dishes and not eaten for its sweetness.

There are many botanical fruits which are culinarily vegetables, including all squashes, tomatoes, peppers (capsicum, not piper nigrum), cucumbers, and so forth. If you consider tomatoes a fruit, you might as well consider eggplant a fruit as well.
