Bt cotton is a result of application of biotechnology in agriculture. Bt toxin is produced by bacteria named Bacillus thuringiensis. This gene is Incorporated in cotton plants such that it becomes resistant to pest.

The toxin gene is present in it's inactive form like a protoxin but once it gets into the gut of an insect, it gets alkaline medium that converts it into active form hence killing the insect.

Various forms of Bt toxin are cryIAc and cryIIAb which control cotton bollworms.
