Business communication is the exchange of information and messages among persons involved in business.  In an organization doing business, communication is done in order to execute orders, do estimations, make plans, deliver goods, manufacture and maintain products etc. Communication is done between two persons or one person to many at a time.

Business communication can take place between persons belonging to the same organization or from an organization to an external person, like service provider or customer or third party vendor.

It is of two types traditionally.  But now it is of three types.

1) Verbal communication.
This is the most used communication. Either direct person to person or by phone or through an indirect verbal communication through a third person, short and crisp orders, instructions and reports are done.

2) Written communication.
Only verbal communication cannot be accepted in official matters related to costs, payments, specifications etc. Official documents written clearly are prepared and communicated with in the office or to an external agent.  These official papers serve as proofs too.  These are done one company letterheads usually. Communication is done by courier or faxing or by post.

3. Online communication.
Nowadays a third type of communication is used.  Online communication.  Most of the communication takes place through workflow systems on the computers belonging to the company.  Data and signed documents too are created, prepared and distributed instantly to the audience.

This is most convenient and instant. It is reliable and safe (hoping security requirements are taken care of).

Business communication can be split into two categories depending on
1) Internal communication
2) external communication

Internal communication could be verbal, online or written. External communication is always written or online.
