Calcium carbonate is a dietary supplement used when the amount of calcium taken in the diet is not enough. Calcium is needed by the body for healthy bones, muscles, nervous system, and heart. Calcium carbonate also is used as an antacid to relieve heartburn, acid indigestion, and upset stomach.

The thermal decomposition of calcium carbonate CaCO3 produces calcium oxide CaO (a.k.a. quicklime) and carbon dioxide gas

When limestone is heated strongly, the calcium carbonate it contains absorbs heat (endothermic ) and decomposes to form calcium oxide. This is indicated by an orange glow as the limestone is heated.

CaCO3 is Calcium Carbonate.

  • It is found in nature in the form of limestone, chalk, marble ect.
  • It is white fluffy powder.
  • It is almost insoluble in water.
  • It can be prepared by pasing CO2 through slaked lime also called Calcium Hydroxide Ca(OH)2 or by addition of Sodium Carbonate to calcium chloride.
