It is a process in which the ore is heated to a high temperature below the melting point of metal in absence of air or limited supply of air. The change that takes place during calcination with reactions are: ... ∙ Ore becomes porous. ∙ Carbonates decompose to oxides.

Explanation:

Calcination

In this process ore is heated to the high temperature below it's melting point in the absence of air (i.e. oxygen) or in a limited amount of air. this makes the ore porous and change the ore in metal oxide.

this process is used for carbonated and hydrated ores.

example - CaCO3 → CaO + CO2

hope this will help you
