Roasting is a pyrochemical process in which the ore is heated with the presence of oxygen or air is below its melting point. It is used in metal oxide and sulphide ore.

Calcination is used to mean a thermal treatment process in the absence or limited supply of air or oxygen applied to ores and other solid materials to bring about a thermal decomposition. It is used in gypsum.
