The reaction in which one metal having high reactivity than the other metal displaces from its compound and forms compound itself is called displacement reaction.

E.g. Zn + HCl ------> ZnCl + H2

Since Zn has high reactivity than H2 it displaces it from the compound HCl and forms ZnCl and releases H2..
