Various nutrients are required by the crops for their growth and development. Plants absorb them from the soil. This can be replenished by adding manures and fertilisers to the soil. The process of adding manures and fertilisers to the soil is called manuring.
Do you know the difference between manures and fertilisers?
Manures are natural, organic substances obtained by the decomposition of animal wastes and plant residues. They supply essential nutrients and humus to the soil and make it fertile.
Manures are of three types: Farmyard manure, compost and green manure.
Farmyard manure consists of cattle dung, straw and other farmyard wastes. Compost is the decomposed remnants of organic materials. It is usually of plant origin, but often includes some animal dung. Vermicompost is another form of compost you have already learnt. In vermicomposting the organic waste is decomposed faster with the help of earthworms. Green manure is a fertiliser consisting of growing plants that are ploughed back into the soil. It consists of all types of pulses (leguminous plants) that have high nitrogen-content. They are grown in field and ploughed back into the soil. They help in replenishment of the soil with nitrogen.
