The North Pole is a point. It lies within an area called the Arctic, but it is not the Arctic.

It’s the same as the intersection of 5th Ave and G St is not the same as the Gaslamp District, nor the same as San Diego, nor the same as California, nor the same as the USA, nor the same as North America. Points and areas are conceptually totally different things.

At the opposite end of the Earth, the South Pole is a point. It lies on the continent of Antarctica, also referred to as the Antarctic. ‘Antarctic’ can also refer to the region, which is (very roughly) either south of about 60° S, or perhaps south of the Antarctic Convergence, which is a line where the condition of the Southern Ocean changes rapidly and significantly.
