The number of electrons left in the last shell (valence shell) is called the valency of the element.
For example- Mg , it atomic number is 12
It electronic configuration: 2,8,2
It needs 6 electrons in last shell to complete it’s octet
So it’s valency becomes 2
Hope it helps!
