Campos is the word used to describe the Brazilian tropical savannah grasslands with scattered broad-leaved trees. It originates back to the 16th century.

• These grasslands include a variety of C3 and C4 grasses, as well as a great diversity of other botanical families, with characteristic tropical and temperate species.
• Since the climate is subtropical humid, with rainfall regularly distributed all over the year, forest physiognomies would be expected to cover the area.  Therefore, Campos grasslands are natural ecosystems.\
• Grazing and fire both have a significant impact on grassland dynamics. Cattle are the most significant grazers in these grasslands since South America lacks big natural herbivores. In Southern Brazil, cattle rearing is one of the most significant economic activities.
