Aldehydes which do not contain any atom(e.g. benzaldehyde, formaldehyde) undergo self oxidation and reduction reaction on treatment with conc. solution of caustic alkali.
In this reaction, one molecule is oxidised to acid while another molecule is reduced to alcohol. This reaction reaction is called Cannizzaro's reaction.
Example :
NOTE : This reaction takes place under the presence of 50% NaOH.
