it is the sixteeth most abundant element in the earth crust . it occurs in the free state as well as in the combined state in the earth crust. it is a pure non metal.In the pure elemental for carbon exists in three crystalline form i.e graphite, diamond and Buckminster fullerene and the major source of carbon is coal.it also exists as carbon black.

Compounds of carbon are defined as chemical substances containing carbon. More compounds ofcarbon exist than any other chemical element except for hydrogen. Organic carbon compounds are far more numerous than inorganic carbon compounds. In general bonds of carbon with other elements are covalent bonds.
