Description of Carbohydrates (Cn[H2O]n)

Carbohydrates are chemically defined as compound which produce them on Hydrolysis process.

in Layman's terms, we acknowledge carbohydrate As Sugar or substance that give sweet taste. They are collectively called at ‛Saccharides.

Classification of Carbohydrates

Based on the number of constituting Sugar units obtained upon hydrolysis , they are classified as :-

1. Monosaccharide - (one unit only) abundantly found in Milk products , beers , fruits ,candies etc. these carbohydrates known as Empty Calories as they do not possesses vitamins, fibre. Example include :-

  • Glucose
  • Fructose
  • Galactose

2. Disaccharide - (two units only) all those carbohydrates compound which do not have more than 2 sugar units is known as disaccharides. Example include :-

  • Sucrose
  • Lactose
  • Maltose

3. Oligosacchrides - (2 - 10 units only) all disaccharide and monosaccharides like Trioses , Pentoses , Hexoses are oligosaccharides.

4. Polysaccharides - (More than 10 units) these are complex carbohydrates evidently found in peas, potatoes , beans , corns, whole - grain etc. Example include :-

  • Starch
  • Glycogen
  • Cellulose
