Sources of carbon monoxide in the home environment can include fuel-burning devices such as: boilers, furnaces, water heaters, fireplaces, charcoal grills, gas and kerosene heaters, gas and wood stoves and clothes dryers. Cigarette and cigar smoking is also a common cause of carbon monoxide pollution.

HARMFULL EFFECTS ARE:

1. Breathing CO can cause headache, dizziness, vomiting, and nausea

2. If CO levels are high enough, you may become unconscious or die.

3.  Exposure to moderate and high levels of CO over long periods of time has also been linked with increased risk of heart disease

Answer:

Carbon monoxide

Carbon monoxide, formed by incomplete combustion of fuels, is a major source of pollution.

Harmful effects of carbon monoxide

➡️ Carbon monoxide, when inhaled, passes through the lungs into the blood. It combines with the haemoglobin (in the blood) to form a complex substance known as carboxy haemoglobin. This complex is unable to transport oxygen to various parts of the body. This causes suffocation and ultimately death.

➡️ A high concentration of carbon monoxide in air affects the growth of plants causing the leaves to drop. It is worthwhile to note here that another well-known gas, carbon dioxide, when present in excess, also causes pollution of air.
