Carbonization (or carbonisation) is the conversion of an organic substance into carbon or a carbon-containing residue through pyrolysis or destructive distillation. It is often used in organic chemistry with reference to the generation of coal gas and coal tar from raw coal.

In prehistoric times many forests got buried under the earth due to some natural causes like floods . These forests got converted into coal due to high pressure and temperature of under the earth. They converted into a form that almost only carbon was left in it . This process is known as carbonisation
