Cartilage is a soft and connective tissue found in various parts of the body. It is mainly found in elbows, knee and ankles. It is also found in the ears.

It also allows for some flexibility of movement, but has more stability than muscle. The extracellular matrix of cartilage is produced by cells called chondroblasts.

There are three types of cartilage:

  • Hyaline - most common, found in the ribs, nose, larynx, trachea. Is a precursor of bone.

  • Fibro- is found in invertebral discs, joint capsules, ligaments.

  • Elastic - is found in the external ear, epiglottis and larynx.
