Gypsum powder (hydrous calcium sulfate/calcium sulfate dihydrate or CaSO4-2H2O) is a white, smooth powder that is derived from heating gypsum stone. Mined gypsum is crushed, heat-dried and ground to a powder. This powder is used in various industrial, construction and agricultural applications.
Uses of Gypsum powder (caso4. 2h2o) are:-
Fertilizer
Gypsum powder-based fertilizer effectively loosens hard subsoil or layers of clay in the garden. It penetrates the clay matrix and loosens its structure. It improves the composition of soil, prevents water runoff and soil erosion, facilitates water and air movement and root growth, converts salty soil into neutral soil, reduces the bulk compactness of tough soil, controls dust erosion, prevents water logging by improving the drainage capability of soil and renders magnesium harmless. Gypsum power increases the effectiveness of organic fertilizers and soil conditioners when combined with them. The calcium content of gypsum balances excess micro-nutrients in soil, such as copper, manganese, zinc and iron. It supplies sulfur, improves the grade of produced fruit and prevents diseases. Gypsum is neutral and will not change the pH of the soil.
Drywalls
Drywall is made from gypsum powder. Gypsum powder is headed to evaporate most of its water content and carbon dioxide composition to form calcium sulfate hemihydrate (CaSO4-1/2H2O)--also called plaster of Paris. Calcium sulfate hemihydrate reconverts back to calcium sulfate dihydrate when mixed with water. This slurry is poured between two thick sheets of heavy paper, flattened and left to set to form drywall. The resulting drywall boards are dried further (if required), cut, finished and packaged for sale. Gypsum powder drywall is fire resistant, thermal resistant, provides sound insulation, easy to repair and durable. Drywall can easily take on numerous finishes, including wallpaper, texturing and paint. According to “Ultimate Guide to Drywall: Pro Tips for Hanging & Finishing,” a 4- by 8-foot drywall panel of half-inch thickness weighs about 54 pounds. Drywall is used as interior wall finishes and on ceilings.
