Any chemical substance which regulates the rate of reaction is known as a catalyst,i.e, it will either speed up the reaction or slow down the rate of reaction

Eg. KMnO4 , K2Cr2O7 etc..

Catalysis is the process of increasing the rate of a chemical reaction by adding a substance known as a catalyst

Sulfuric acid used as a catalyst for the formation of diethyl ether from ethyl alcohol is an example of homogeneous catalysis in the liquid phase

hope it helps!!
