Catalyst is the substance which alters the rate of a reaction without itself undergoing any chemical reaction.

A catalyst participates in a chemical reaction by forming temporary bonds with the reactants resulting in an intermediate complex which decomposers to yield products and catalyst the catalyst provides an alternate pathway by reducing the the activation energy between reactants and products this is how it lowers the potential energy barrier..
