Catenation Definition: Catenation is the binding of an element to itself through covalent bonds to form chain or ring molecules.

Examples: Carbon is the most common element that exhibits catenation. It can form long hydrocarbon chains and rings like benzene.

hope it helps...!!!!❤

WHAT IS CATENATION?

catenation is the bonding of atoms of the same element into a series, called a chain. ... Catenation occurs most readily with carbon, which forms covalent bonds with other carbon atoms to form longer chains and structures. This is the reason for the presence of the vast number of organic compounds in nature

EASY EXPLAINATION

Catenation occurs when atoms of the same element covalently bond to one another to create a chain or ring. The most common element that can undergo catenation is carbon. Silicon, oxygen, and selenium are other elements that can catenate. The ability of an element to catenate is based on several factors including the bond energy of the atom (348 kJ/mol for a carbon-carbon single bond), its electronegativity (2.55 for carbon), and the number of valence electrons (4 for carbon).

PROPERTIES OF CARBON

Carbon is element number 14 on the periodic table. It has a molecular weight of 12 g/mol. Each carbon atom has four electrons available to form covalent bonds. Diamond and graphite are two of the most common natural forms of carbon that exist. These structures differ in their physical forms. Diamond is one of the hardest forms while graphite is one of the softest.
