heya!

Cathepsin D has been found to be involved in the degradation of major tail tissues such as epidermis, muscle, spinal cord, notochord cells and blood cells in the regressing tail. Interestingly, it has also been found to be involved in the pre-regressing tail prior to visible tail regression.

Answer: Cathepsins are proteases  found in all animals as well as other organisms. There are approximately a dozen members of this family, which are distinguished by their structure, catalytic mechanism, and which proteins they cleave. It causes degradation of tissues such as epidermis, muscle, spinal cord, notochord cells and blood cells in the regressing tail of tadpoles.

Glossary:

1. Proteases - enzymes that degrade proteins.

2. Catalytic mechanism - sequence of elementary reactions by which a catalytic reaction proceeds.

3. Notochord -  a primitive beginning to the backbone.
