Cathode Rays Experiment-

It was given by Julius plucker and William Crookes.

Name was given by J.J. Thomson and Stoney.

Two Favourable Conditions were required for experiment-

1. High Voltage

2. Very Low Pressure

Construction-

1. A cathode ray tube in which two metal rods are connected at the opposite ends through a high voltage battery.

2. The negative terminal of the battery is connected to cathode and positive terminal of the battery is connected to anode.

3. Vacuum pump was used to control the pressure inside the tube.

Check out the attachment where

A is Anode

B is ZnS (Flourescent)

C is Vacuum Pump

Working-

1. When a high voltage applied across the electrodes with very low pressure inside the tube than some particle sugar object moving from cathode to anode.

2. To verify this observation anode was perforated and a flourescent screen of zinc sulphite(ZnS) was placed behind the anode.

3. On the screen certain bright spots appeared. This confirms that some particles were moving from cathode. So they were named as cathode rays.

Results-

1. Discovery of electron => J.J. Thomson

2. Nomenclature of electron => Stoney
