Cattle Farming
After agriculture, cattle farming is considered to be the next best option of revenue generation in India and is mostly practiced by the farmers of this country. ICAR (Indian Council for Agricultural Research), State Agricultural Universities and non-governmental research organizations etc., have undertaken many studies to improve the livestock and its management. Intensive crossbreeding programme in cattle has led to the evolution of high-yielding dairy breed animals.
Human beings domesticate the cattle to fulfil their needs such as milk, meat, leather etc. So the cattle are specifically reared either to meet the dairy demands or for draught purposes or to fullfill both the purposes. In India, at present there are twenty six well defined breeds of cattle and six breeds of buffaloes found spread all over the country. Among mammals, cattles belong to the genus Bos (ruminant quadrupeds), and the species is divided into Bos indicus (humped cattle), Bos taurus (without any hump) , Bos bubalis (the buffalo).
