  • The fundamental organisational unit of life is called a cell.
  • Cells in the living organism are basic structural units. They have different designs, shapes and sizes in the living organism. In the living world, organisms differ from one another in the cell structures, but all are made up of cells. Cells in the living organisms are complex living structures.

Description of the structure of a cell

  • A cell is the the basic unit of all living organisms.
  • It is made up of protoplasm and consists of three parts. They are nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane/Plasma membrane. the nucleus is separated from the cytoplasm by the nuclear membrane. It is porus to allow movement of material between the cytoplasm and the inside of the nucleus. The nucleus contains nucleolus and chromosomes.
  • The cytoplasm is the matter between cell membrane and the nucleus. It contains organelles. In plant cells, the cytoplasm contain plastids.
  • The plasma membrane encloses the cell and decides the shape of the cell. It is porous in order to allow the movement of materials between the cytoplasm and the inside of the nucleus. Plant cells have a cell wall in addition to a cell membrane.
