A cell is the smallest structural and functional unit of an organism.

  • The cell can either be bound by a single membrane as in animals, or by a cell membrane and the cell wall as in plants. The cell membrane is semi-permeable while the cell wall is fully permeable.
  • The mass of the cellular structure is filled with the cytoplasm which contains the different cell organelles. The cytoplasm protects the cell from any mechanical damage and gives it characteristic shape.
  • The different organelles in the cytoplasm include the mitochondria, chloroplast (only in plants), ribosomes, endoplasmic reticulum, golgi apparatus, etc. Each of these have their own functions and are involved in maintaining the cell.
  • The nucleus is the brain of the cell and is also situated in the cytoplasm. It has its own nuclear membrane and consists of the organism's genome. In humans, the genome includes all the different chromosomes which are made up of DNA and histone proteins.
