• A cell is the unit if life and is a fundamental membrane bound structural and functional unit of life that contains cytoplasm and organelles.

The cells belonging to diverse organisms and different regions of the same organisms have a fundamental similarity in their structure, chemical composition and metabolism. All new cells arise from the pre-existing ones.

Robert Hooke was the first to observe cells in a cork but he saw was actually the cell wall enclosing spaces left by dead protoplasts. Anton von Leeuwenhoek first saw and described living cells.

• On the basis of nuclear organisations cells can be classified into two types :-

a. Prokaryotic cells ( without nucleus ).

b. Eukaryotic cells ( with nucleus ).
