» Cells are the structural and functional unit of life.

• All living organisms are made up of cell. That's why cell is known as structural unit of life.

• A single cell can perform all life functions with the help of it's components. Therefore it is known as functional unit of life.

» Robert Hooke first discovered the cell in 1665. 

• He prepared a thin slice of cork and observed it under self made microscope. He saw some box like structures which he named as cell.

★ Cell was discovered by Robert Hooke in 1665 while he was examining a thin slice of cork under his self designed microscope.

★ Hooke observed the honeycomb like structures consisting of many compartments ; Robert Hooke called these boxes as Cells.

★ the word "cell" is a Latin word which means ' a little room '.

★ Cells are enclosed by a plasma membrane which is composed of lipids and proteins.

★ cells are of two types : eukaryotic and prokaryotic.

★ The outermost layer of our skin consists of dead cells.

★ A cell can be unicellular or multicellular ; unicellular means having only one cell , example, amoeba and multicellular means having multiple cells , example , humans.
