Note that this explanation ignores a host of other things: Kinetic Energy (which is positive and decreases as we move further away from the nucleus), Electron-Electron repulsion etc. However, decreased interaction with the nucleus is the principal reason why electronsfurther from the nucleus are higher in energy.
