electrolytic cell and galvanic cell is

The electrochemical reaction has a negative value of the Gibbs free energy and a positive cell potential difference.

*An electrochemical cell that releases energy is called a galvanic cell.

*An electrolytic mode is a energy source causes the reaction to go in the direction opposite to the spontaneous direction.

*An electrolytic cell has an endothermic chemical reaction.

* The reaction is not spontaneous so a power source is required.

*Energy is stored in an electrochemical cell. That energy can be released when the cell is allowed to run in a galvanic mode.

A Galvanic cell is one in which the ‘Gibbs free energy decreases’ on using the energy of the cell. In case of Galvanic cell, the reaction is spontaneous. That is the ‘Gibbs free energy decreases’ gradually.

Explanation:

  • Ultimately the ‘Gibbs free energy’ becomes equal to the threshold energy and the Galvanic cell stops working.
  • But in case of electrolytic cell, energy is applied from outside through electrical current so that the Gibbs free energy increases thus making the conversion of chemical energy to electrical energy much more spontaneous.
