When electricity is passed through an aqueous solution of sodium chloride , it decomposes to form sodium hydroxide . This process is called chlor-alkali process. It is called so because the products formed in the reaction are chlorine and sodium hydroxide .

I HOPE MY ANS IS CORRECT ....

Here We are going to discuss What is Chlor alkali process and why it is named so and the reaction involved in this Process

What is Chlor-alkali Process ?

When electricity is passed through an aqueous Solution of Sodium Chloride i.e. Nacl ( called brine) , it decomposes to form Sodium hydroxide

The process is called the Chlor-alkali process

In this process Chlorine gas is given off at the anode

Hydrogen gas at the Cathode

Sodium hydroxide Solution is formed near the cathode

The three product formed in this process i.e. Sodium hydroxide , hydrogen and Chlorine gas are all useful to us

Hydrogen gas at cathode use for fuels and ammonia for fertilisers

While Chlorine gas at anode use for Water treatment , PVC and pesticides

Sodium hydroxide is use for Soaps and Detergents and paper making

If we take reaction between hydrogen and Chlorine it also formed a product is useful

Hydrochloric acid is use for Cleaning Steel , Medicines etc .

If We take Sodium hydroxide and Chlorine it gives us BLEACH

BLEACH is use for Household bleaches and beaching fabric

The process is named Chlor-alkali process due to the reason as below :

The process is named as Chlor-alkali process because of the product formed -Chlor for Chlorine and alkali for Sodium hydroxide
