Displacement Reaction.

➳ It is a chemical reaction in which one element displaces the another one in a compound .

or

" A reaction in which the element if higher reactivity displaces the element of lower reactivity from it's compound is known as displacement reaction "

 \\ \: \displaystyle \sf Fe(s) + CuSO_{4}(aq)\longrightarrow FeSO_{4}(aq) + Cu(s) \\

In the above reaction,

  • Fe → Iron.
  • CuSO₄ → copper sulphate solution (blue)
  • FeSO₄ → iron sulphate solution (green)
  • Cu → copper.

\\ \: \displaystyle \sf Zn(s) + CuSO_{4}(aq)\longrightarrow \: Zn SO_{4}(aq) + Cu(s) \\

In the above reaction,

  • CuSO₄ → copper sulphate solution (blue).
  • Zn → zinc.
  • ZnSO₄ → zinc sulphate solution (colourless)
  • Cu → copper.

A displacement reaction is the one wherein the atom or a set of atoms is displaced by another atom in a molecule. For instance, when iron is added to a copper sulphate solution, it displaces the copper metal. The above equation exists when A is more reactive than B.
