The chemical formula of a Compound represents the Composition of a molecule of the compound in terms of the symbols of the elements present in it ,

e . g . , a formula of H , 0 represents that water has two atoms of hydrogen element and one atom of oxygen element .

Method for Writing the Formula

If we want to write the formula of a Compound which is Inade up of two elements having valencies X and y , respectively . It can be done as follows

1 . Write the symbols or formulae of the basic radicals to the left and acidic radicals to the right .

2 . The valency of each radical is written on the radicals .

3 . The Criss - Cross rule is applied by exchange of numerical value of valency of each radical .

4 . A Complex radical ( or Compound radical ) is enclosed in brackets and the subscript is written outside the lower right hand corner ,

5 . A common factor is eliminated and unit subscript is Omitted .

CHEMICAL FORMULA :

The Chemical formula of a substance is based on the composition of that substance. For example :----- the chemical formula of water is written and H2O this means that the water molecule is formed by the combination of two atoms of hydrogen and one atoms of oxygen.

Similarly , the formula of carbon dioxide is CO2. This means that a carbon dioxide molecule is formed by the combination of one atom of carbon and two atom of Oxygen.

★ HOW TO WRITE THE CHEMICAL FORMULA ?

To write the chemical formula for substance the chemical symbols of the elements are returned and the number of atoms of each element is written as a subscript to the right side of its symbol. For example -----› Nitric acid contains one atom of Hydrogen and one atom of Nitrogen and three atoms of oxygen. The chemical formula of nitric acid is therefore written as HNO3 ( One is not written as a subscript ), similarly glucose contain 6 atoms of carbon 12 atoms of hydrogen and 6 atoms of oxygen. It's chemical formula is therefore written as C6H12O6.
