Chennai Model of United Nations or CHEMUN is an annual global conference of school children. It is conducted by the American International School in Chennai every year since 2006 in November.
The main idea is to let the students stimulate their minds and use their intelligence and wisdom to solve global issues that are hard to deal with and resolve. Obviously the students must have a clearly focussed intention towards service to humanity.
Representatives (students) from schools from all over the world are invited to participate in this conference. They discuss over 3 days, various issues of global importance like, war between nations that are going on, effects on health due to pollution, situation in Iraq, Sudan, African countries which are worrisome, Human Rights, Environment, International security issues...
The way the students organize themselves is similar to that of the delegates of the UNO from various countries in the official UNO meetings. The students get familiar with International affairs, know UNO procedures and interact with students from many nations.
The student participants mostly are from 10th,11th or 12 std. They present their views, discuss, debate, conclude and pass some resolutions. There is a student team in the Americal school in Chennai which is responsible for the conduction of these events in various departments/committees.
I suppose participation in them needs official representation and recommendation from schools. Probably there are selections held to represent in this CHEMUN.
