Child labour refers to the exploitation of children through any form of work that deprives children of their childhood, interferes with their ability to attend regular school, and is mentally, physically, socially or morally harmful. Various causes of child labour are the curse of poverty, lack of educational resources, social and economic backwardness, diseases and disability, the lure pf cheap labour, family tradition, discrimination between boys and girls, etc.
The consequences of child labour are manifold like general child injuries and abuses, sexual abuse, early and unwanted pregnancy, alcoholism, corporal punishment, verbal attacks, deprivation of family love, lack of adequate provision of food, etc.
Awareness in the society should be spread to curb child labour. More stringent laws regarding child labour should be framed and implemented effectively. Providing free and good quality education to all children reduces the incidence of child labour. Fortunately, there are many dedicated charity workers who do spend almost everyday tacking this issue. We still have a long way to combat child labour in India.
