♣ Chipko Movement ♣
Forests are the main source of livelihood especially in hilly areas. In 1970's and 1980's, there was a resistance by the people against cutting of trees. This movement started in 1974 in Garhwal. Cutting large number of trees in the Garhwal region led to landslides and floods. In 1974, hundred of women from Chamoli district in uttrakhand went into forests.
When the woodcutters arrived, The women put their arms around the trees, and refused to move, telling the woodcutters that they would not be able to cut the trees without first killing them.
This movement gradually spread throughout India and came to known as Chipko Movement. ‛Chipko’ means to hug or to embrace. As the villagers hugged the trees, it prevented the trees from falling. The success of this movement saved thousands of trees from being fallen. The movement was led by Chandi prasad Bhatt and Sundarlal Bahuguna, well known environmentalists of India.

Began in the year 1970, the Chipko movement was a movement for the conservation of forests in India. The emergence of this movement is observed in the Uttarakhand state of India and particularly in Reni village. It generated an exemplar for commencing nonviolent demonstration in India and its achievement indicated that the world instantly took intimation of this non-violent demonstration, which was to urge in time many alike eco-groups by serving to slow down the speedy deforestation, endanger vested benefits, improve environmental awareness, and illustrate the viability of public power. During the course of this movement, people began hugging the trees of their areas when the British officers came to cut down the trees.
