Answer:-

The chlor alkali process is a process in which electricity is passed through aqueous solution of sodium chloride. It decomposers and forms aqueous brine solution of sodium hydroxide, hydrogen gas and chlorine gas.

This process is named as chlor alkali process because of the products, chlor for chlorine and alkali for alkaline brine solution of sodium hydroxide.

The reaction involved in this process is:-

\tt{2NaCl(aq)+3H_{2}O(l)\longrightarrow 2NaOH(aq)+Cl_{2}(g)+H_{2}(g)}

The diagram for this reaction is given in attached photo.

Extra information:-

  • The chlorine gas form in the process is used in water treatment, PVC, disinfectants, CFCs and as pesticides.
  • The hydrogen gas formed in the process is used as fuel, ammonia, fertilizers, etc.
  • The alkaline brine solution of sodium hydroxide is used as degreasing agent of metals. It is also used for making papers and artificial fibres and in making soaps and detergents.
