Answer:
☆Defination:
Chlorophyll is the pigments which trap the solar radiation for the light-dependent reaction of photosynthesis. It is not soluble in water, because of the presence of a hydrophobic tail. It is soluble in organic solvents like acetone.
☆The role of chlorophyll in the photosynthesis:
- Chlorophyll assists this transfer as when chlorophyll absorbs light energy, an electron in chlorophyll is excited from a lower energy state to a higher energy state.
- Thus, chlorophyll is at the centre of the photosynthetic oxidation-reduction reaction between carbon dioxide and water.
- These reactions use photolysis or the use of light energy to split water molecules and produce oxygen.
- In these light-dependent reactions, light energy is absorbed by chlorophyll and other pigments and transferred to the reaction centre of photosystem II.
