✵ Chromosomes are the highly condensed coiled chromatin fibres .

✵They were first discovered by Hofmeister in 1848


✵He noticed them in rapidly dividing cells of Tradescantia and called them nuclear filaments .

✵Waldeyer in 1888 gave the name chromosomes to these nuclear filaments.


✵These are seen in the nuclei of dividing cells only at the metaphase and anaphase stage of cell division.
