civilized forest” would best be described by example. The Black Forest near Vienna, in Austria, is one such forest. You can take the street car from the Vienna CBD, and get off in the Black Forest. There are mature oaks, elms and other trees typical of a northern deciduous forest. The understorey consists of younger individuals of the canopy species, and other trees that never reach a very large size. The ground layer is finely manicured and intensively managed - if a stick falls down, someone picks it up and puts it in a neat pile which will be used as firewood. There is limited large fauna, particularly large mammals, but abundant birds and some small mammals.

Another example of a civilized forest might be found in Central Park in New York City, New York. Completely surrounded by the urban environment, it contains all the elements of a forest in some of its more remote parts.

In other more remote areas, civilized forests have been created land management authorities to allow their use by humans without degrading the forest environment. The areas around visitor centers in large national parks can be considered civilized, in that the forest is accessible by walking tracks, there is explanatory signage in many places and the opportunity to experience forest conditions. The area on the north rim of the Grand Canyon in North America has civilized coniferous at the road head on the edge of the canyon. There are similar forests on New Zealand’s south island near Queens-town, near resort hotels.

I hope this helps. There is probably a civilized forest somewhere near you.
