ANSWER: CLAUSE
A CLAUSE IS PART OF A SENTENCE. IT CONTAINS A SUBJECT AND A VERB. CLAUSE MAY BE INDEPENDENT OR DEPENDENT.
- AN INDEPENDENT CLAUSE CAN FUNCTION AS A COMPLETE SENTENCE IN ITSELF BECAUSE ITS MEANING IS COMPLETE.
- A DEPENDENT CLAUSE CANNOT FUNCTION SEPARATELY AS A SENTENCE BECAUSE IT DOES NOT MAKE COMPLETE SENSE. IN ORDER TO CONVEY ITS MEANING, IT HAS TO DEPEND UPON AN INDEPENDENT CLAUSE TO WHICH IT IS ATTACHED.
