A clause is a group of words that contains a subject and verb with their modifiers. There are 2 types of clause

l.  The independent clause stand alone.  Example:  Our police department is the best one in this area.

2.  The dependent or subordinate clause cannot stand alone.  It depends on the main clause. Example:  Although I live in the smallest town in this area, our town’s police department is the best

ANSWER:                             CLAUSE

A CLAUSE IS PART OF A SENTENCE. IT CONTAINS A SUBJECT AND A VERB. CLAUSE MAY BE INDEPENDENT OR DEPENDENT.

  • AN INDEPENDENT CLAUSE CAN FUNCTION AS A COMPLETE SENTENCE IN ITSELF BECAUSE ITS MEANING IS COMPLETE.
  • A DEPENDENT CLAUSE CANNOT FUNCTION SEPARATELY AS A SENTENCE BECAUSE IT DOES NOT MAKE COMPLETE SENSE. IN ORDER TO CONVEY ITS MEANING, IT HAS TO DEPEND UPON AN INDEPENDENT CLAUSE TO WHICH IT IS ATTACHED.
