There is often confusion between weather and climate. Weather is the condition of the atmosphere at a particular place over a short period of time, whereas climate refers to the weather pattern, using statistical data, of a place over a long enough period to yield meaningful averages.[1][2]
Meteorology studies weather, while climatologystudies climate; both are atmospheric sciences. Climate is an important physical element because it indicates the atmospheric condition of heat, moisture and circulation; it plays a dominant role in shaping vegetation and soil; and it ultimately affects all forms of life, as a result of the very definition of the word, which is a scientific prediction, based on evidentiary statistics, sustained over a long period.

Climate is the average weather conditions that surround you—the seasonal changes of temperature, humidity, and the predominant wind speed and direction; the amount of rain or snow per month, the frequency and strength of extreme weather conditions such as storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, and wildfires through the months of the year.

The climate of a place is affected many factors—its latitude, elevation, terrain, geographic proximity to mountains, rivers, lakes, and ocean. If the place is near a mountain, the height and shape of the mountain and whether the place is on the windward side or leeward side of a mountain would affect its climate. If the place is near a lake, whether the place is on the windward side or the leeward side would also affect its climate. Even with nearly the same latitude, the place’s geographic relation to the ocean can greatly affects its climate. For example, Los Angeles on the west coast of US and Charleston on the east coast are of nearly the same latitude, but they have starkly different climate.

Climate determines what kinds of vegetation can grow in the place, what wildlife you can find, what types of agriculture can be sustained, and what types of economic activities are feasible historically.
