What is Clonal propagation?

It is a group of individuals in other words they are cells derived from a single individual or by asexual reproduction in cells, this process is called as Clonal propagation.

Or

Multiplication of genetically identical copies of a cultivar by asexual reproduction is called clonal propogation or cloning or micro propogation.

Some Special Points:-

➨ All the cells in culture are dernved irom a single explant by mitotic division.

➨ All plantlets regenerate from a culture generally, have the same genotype and consirute a clone.

➨ These plantlets can be used for rapid clonal propogation of superior lines like oil palm.

➨ Two common types of micropropogation are

  • (a) Multiple shootlet production
  • (b) Somatic embryogenesis
